LORD RANDOLPH CHURCHILL IN SOUTH AFRICA; A SKETCH OF THE COUNTRY FROM MATIPIs KRaL: " On Sunday, the 2nd August, we traversed for fourteen miles a magnificent country, hilly, well watered, the bush veldt being more open and park-like than before, dotted with many and various fine trees, covered thickly with sweet grass, good for oxen, with a soil capable of growing every species of agricultural produce. This good country extends from the Lundi to within a few miles of Fort Victoria, a distance of about sixty miles, and is incomparably the best part of Mashonaland which I have yet seen or heard of."

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures Lord Randolph Churchill's journey through South Africa, specifically a sketch of the country from Matipis Kraal. The image showcases the stunning landscape that he encountered on Sunday, August 2nd. As he traversed for fourteen miles, Lord Churchill marveled at the magnificent hilly terrain and abundant water sources. The bush veldt in this region differed from previous areas as it was more open and reminiscent of a park with scattered fine trees. The land was covered in thick sweet grass, ideal for grazing oxen, while its fertile soil could sustain various agricultural produce. Lord Churchill noted that this exceptional countryside extended from Lundi to just a few miles shy of Fort Victoria – approximately sixty miles in total. He regarded it as incomparably the best part of Mashonaland based on what he had seen or heard about thus far. The engraving itself is an illustrative technique employed during the Victorian era, showcasing historical significance and artistic prowess. Its retro-styled appearance adds to its charm and cultural value. This print offers us a glimpse into Lord Randolph Churchill's exploration of South Africa's natural beauty and serves as a testament to his admiration for this particular region within Mashonaland.
