EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the coatee of a British officer wounded at the historic Battle of Waterloo in 1815. The textile artifact, created by an unknown English artist from the 19th century, is currently housed in the National Army Museum in London. The coatee belonged to Lieutenant Henry Anderson, who valiantly fought on the front lines during this momentous battle. The short-tailed garment features a vibrant scarlet color with light green facings and gilt buttons inscribed with "69" representing his affiliation with the 2nd Battalion of the South Lincolnshire Regiment. What makes this piece truly remarkable is its connection to Lt. Anderson's personal experience on that fateful day. On closer inspection, one can spot dried bloodstains underneath his left armpit - evidence of where he was shot in the shoulder during combat. This image serves as a powerful reminder of both sacrifice and resilience exhibited by soldiers like Lt. Anderson during times of war. It not only provides us with a glimpse into military fashion and uniform design but also offers insight into individual stories that are often overshadowed by larger historical events. Through this photograph, we are transported back to one specific moment in history when bravery clashed against adversity on the battlefield at Waterloo.
