The Fishseller

EDITORS COMMENTS
by Thomas Rowlandson captures a charming scene from the late 18th century countryside. In this watercolour and ink print, Rowlandson skillfully portrays the humorous interaction between a young countrywoman and a travelling fish-seller. The composition focuses on the comic aspect of the encounter, as the coyly gazing woman seems oblivious to the pungent smell emanating from the fish.
