Confederate General Hood wounded at the battle of Chickamauga, American Civil War, 1863

Confederate General Hood wounded at the battle of Chickamauga, Georgia, American Civil War, 1863. The battle, fought on 18-20 September 1860 claimed over 34, 000 casualties and saw the Confederate Army of the Tennessee under General Braxton Bragg repulse an offensive by the Union Army of the Cumberland commanded by Major General Rosecrans. General John Bell Hood (1831-1879) had a reputation for bravery, being one of the few Civil War generals who personally led his troops into combat on the field of battle. He lost the use of an arm after being wounded at Gettysburg, and had a leg amputated as a result of the wounds he suffered at Chickamauga. He returned to active duty however, being appointed commander of the Army of the Tennessee in July 1864

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the haunting image of Confederate General Hood, wounded at the battle of Chickamauga during the American Civil War in 1863. The fierce battle, fought in Georgia from September 18th to 20th, resulted in a staggering number of casualties exceeding 34,000. In this historic moment frozen in time, we witness General Hood on horseback, embodying bravery and courage as he led his troops into combat. General John Bell Hood was renowned for his fearless leadership and personal involvement on the battlefield. Despite losing an arm at Gettysburg prior to this photograph being taken, he continued to serve actively until further injuries sustained at Chickamauga forced him to have a leg amputated. Remarkably resilient, General Hood returned to duty and assumed command of the Army of Tennessee in July 1864. The monochrome composition adds depth and intensity to this powerful depiction of war's toll on both man and animal. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded not only of the sacrifices made by soldiers like General Hood but also by their loyal steeds who carried them through countless battles. Through this wood engraving preserved by Ann Ronan Pictures, we are transported back to the turbulent nineteenth century when our nation was divided by conflict. This print serves as a poignant reminder of those who fought valiantly during one of America's darkest chapters – men like General John Bell Hood who exemplified unwavering dedication amidst unimaginable adversity.
