Deployment of the Hubble Space Telescope, 1990
Deployment of the Hubble Space Telescope, 1990. The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) was put into orbit from the Space Shuttle Discovery, mission STS-31 on 24 April 1990. HST, still in the grip of the shuttles robot arm, is backdropped against Cuba and the Bahamas. HST was designed to see seven times further into space than had been possible before, without the distortion caused by the earths atmosphere. Problems with its giant mirror meant that it did not initially work as well as expected. Corrective optics were installed in 1993, greatly improving the telescopes performance, enabling it to view the Universe in unprecedented detail

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic moment of the deployment of the Hubble Space Telescope in 1990. Suspended in space by the firm grip of the Space Shuttle Discovery's robot arm, this technological marvel is set against a breathtaking backdrop of Cuba and the Bahamas. The Hubble Space Telescope was a groundbreaking innovation designed to revolutionize our understanding of the universe. With its ability to see seven times further into space than ever before, free from atmospheric distortion, it promised unprecedented views of celestial wonders. However, initial disappointment arose due to problems with its giant mirror. Nevertheless, scientists persevered and installed corrective optics in 1993, greatly enhancing its performance. This image represents not only a significant milestone in scientific exploration but also symbolizes human ingenuity and determination. It embodies concepts such as innovation, technology, and experimentation that have propelled us forward throughout history. The vibrant colors present within this photograph add an element of beauty to this remarkable feat achieved by NASA's mission STS-31. As we gaze upon this print today, we are reminded of humanity's relentless pursuit for knowledge about our vast universe. This photo stands as a testament to mankind's unwavering curiosity and serves as an inspiration for future generations who will continue pushing boundaries beyond what was once thought possible.
