Edmond Halley, English astronomer and mathematician
Edmond Halley, English astronomer and mathematician, c1720 (1794). Edmond Halley (1656-1742), Astronomer Royal from 1720 until 1742, discovered the proper motions of stars and the periodicity of comets. He correctly calculated that the comets seen in 1531 and 1607 were the same objects that followed a 76 year orbit - the comet now know as Halleys Comet. Unfortunately, Halley did not live to see his prediction come true when the comet returned on Christmas Eve 1758. After a portrait by Richard Phillips, painted soon after Halley became Astronomer Royal

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed Edmond Halley, a prominent English astronomer and mathematician from the 18th century. Serving as Astronomer Royal from 1720 until his passing in 1742, Halley made groundbreaking discoveries that revolutionized our understanding of celestial phenomena. Halley's most notable achievement was his identification of the periodicity of comets and their proper motions. Through meticulous calculations, he accurately predicted that the comets observed in 1531 and 1607 were one and the same, following a remarkable orbit with a cycle of approximately 76 years. This extraordinary comet is now famously known as Halley's Comet. Regrettably, Halley did not live to witness his prediction come to fruition when the comet reappeared on Christmas Eve in 1758. Nevertheless, this portrait by Richard Phillips captures him at an important juncture in his career when he assumed the role of Astronomer Royal. With its monochromatic elegance and attention to detail, this engraving offers us a glimpse into the life and achievements of this brilliant scientist. It serves as a testament to Halley's significant contributions to astronomy and mathematics while highlighting his enduring legacy within scientific circles. As we admire this print, we are reminded of Edmond Halley's unwavering dedication to unraveling nature's mysteries through rigorous observation and calculation—a true pioneer whose impact continues to inspire generations of scientists worldwide.
