The English wait for the French at the Battle of Crecy, France 1346 (1864). The English army lay down on the ground to rest whilst waiting for the French troops at Crecy. Dividing his force into three divisions Edward III (1312-1377) of England took station by a windmill to survey the whole field. One of the defining battles of the Hundred Years War, Crecy was a victory for the English over a much larger French army, brought about largely by the impact of the English longbowmen

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this lithograph by James William Edmund Doyle, we are transported back to the defining moments of the Hundred Years War. The scene depicts a crucial pause in the battle as the English army rests on the ground, eagerly awaiting their formidable French adversaries at Crecy. Divided into three divisions under King Edward III's command, the English forces strategically position themselves near a windmill to gain a comprehensive view of the battlefield.
