Frankfort TG-1A (Cinema), 1930s. Creator: Frankfort Sailplane Company
Stan Corcorans TG-1A (Training Glider Model 1A) was the first aircraft selected to train U.S. Army glider pilot cadets to fly the Waco CG-4A combat assualt glider. The Waco could be difficult to handle with heavy loads, and a skilled pilot was required to fly it. Until late in the war, Wacos were only produced in limited numbers, and none were available for training. Before bidding on producing the TG-1A, Stan Corcoran had produced gliders for the civilian market at his Frankfort Sailplane Company factory. In May 1942, the firm won a contract to build 40 TG-1As. Production began immediately, and the order was completed by November 1942. Each glider cost $2, 775 to build but Corcorans factory lacked the resources to quickly produce large numbers of gliders. The Schweizer Aircraft Corporation easily built many more TG-2 gliders, a design similar to the TG-1A. By wars end, nearly 1, 100 dedicated military training gliders were completed

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Frankfort TG-1A, a remarkable aircraft that played a crucial role in training U. S. Army glider pilot cadets during the 1930s. Created by the esteemed Frankfort Sailplane Company, this training glider model was specifically designed to prepare pilots for flying the challenging Waco CG-4A combat assault glider. The Waco, known for its difficulty in handling heavy loads, required skilled and experienced pilots at its helm. However, due to limited production numbers and unavailability of Wacos for training purposes until late in the war, an alternative solution was needed. Enter Stan Corcorans' TG-1A. In May 1942, after winning a contract to build 40 TG-1As, production began immediately at Corcoran's factory. By November of that same year, all orders were completed successfully. Each meticulously crafted glider cost $2,775 to produce; however, despite their effectiveness as military training tools, Corcoran's factory faced challenges in rapidly scaling up production. Interestingly enough, Schweizer Aircraft Corporation effortlessly manufactured numerous TG-2 gliders with a design similar to the TG-1A during this time period. By the end of World War II, nearly 1,100 dedicated military training gliders had been produced by Frankfort Sailplane Company alone – an impressive testament to their contribution towards shaping competent and proficient U. S. Army glider pilots who would go on to play vital roles in combat operations across various theaters of war.
