The Judgment of Paris,

EDITORS COMMENTS
a captivating engraving by the renowned 16th-century Italian artist, Giorgio Ghisi, presents a mesmerizing depiction of the legendary Greek myth. This masterpiece, created in the 1550s, is now a cherished addition to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's collection in the United States. The image portrays Paris, a Trojan prince, seated confidently on a chariot, flanked by the three goddesses: Venus, Aphrodite; Athena, Pallas Athene; and Juno, Hera. Each goddess extends an olive branch and a golden apple, vying for Paris' favor. The chariot is drawn by two putti, or cherubs, adding an angelic touch to the scene. Paris, unable to choose between the goddesses, seeks the advice of the wise goddess Minerva, or Pallas Athena. She advises him to award the apple to the goddess who offers the most beautiful gift. Venus, in an act of cunning, bribes Paris with the promise of Helen, the most beautiful woman in the world. Paris, seduced by this offer, awards the apple to Venus, leading to the infamous Trojan War. This engraving, with its intricate details, transports us back to the ancient world, offering a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Greek mythology. The Judgment of Paris by Giorgio Ghisi is a testament to the enduring power of art to capture and preserve history, culture, and the human imagination.
