Portrait of Frederick de Vries and His Dog, 1597. Creator: Hendrick Goltzius (Dutch, 1558-1617)
Portrait of Frederick de Vries and His Dog, 1597. The inscription in the center states: " I dedicate [this work] to the excellent painter Dirck de Vries in Venice out of friendship and to represent his absent son." The inscription in the bottom margin, written by the Dutch scholar Petrus Scriverius (or Peter Schrijver, 1576-1660), reads: " You may not understand what is contained in this work: Here is the meaning for you in a few words. Simplicity seeks and loves faithfulness. The faithful dog and the innocent boy, that Goltzius faithfully rendered with a Phidian hand in copper." Goltzius made this print for his friend the painter Dirck de Vries (Netherlandish, active 1590-1609) to let him know how his son was progressing under Goltziuss care in the Dutch city of Haarlem. The two artists had met in Venice, where de Vries still lived. Phidias, referred to in the inscription, was an ancient Greek sculptor whose works were celebrated for their classical forms and their expressions of noble and moral character

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite "Portrait of Frederick de Vries and His Dog" by Hendrick Goltzius, a renowned Dutch artist from the 16th century. Created in 1597, this masterpiece is not only a testament to Goltzius' exceptional talent but also serves as a heartfelt dedication to his dear friend, painter Dirck de Vries. The inscription at the center of the portrait reveals that Goltzius crafted this work as a gift for Dirck de Vries while he resided in Venice. It was intended to depict Dirck's absent son and symbolize their enduring friendship. The bottom margin features an inscription by Dutch scholar Petrus Scriverius, shedding light on the deeper meaning behind this artwork. Scriverius explains that simplicity seeks and cherishes faithfulness, which is exemplified through Goltzius' portrayal of both the loyal dog and innocent boy with remarkable precision akin to Phidias' sculpting prowess. Phidias was an esteemed ancient Greek sculptor known for his ability to capture noble character and moral values within his works. This print holds significant sentimental value as it served as a means for Goltzius to update Dirck de Vries on his son's progress under his care in Haarlem, Netherlands. It stands as a testament not only to their friendship but also showcases Goltzius' mastery in capturing emotion and character through artistry.
