Portrait of Jane Hoskyns, c. 1778-1780. Creator: George Romney (British, 1734-1802)

Portrait of Jane Hoskyns, c. 1778-1780. The sitter married Sir John Read in 1774, who also sat for a portrait by the artist in 1788. Born in Lancashire, Romney first apprenticed in his fathers cabinetmakers shop. He worked in the north of England until 1762, when he settled in London. There he became a successful portraitist, alongside Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Gainsborough. As with many successful portraitists, his heart lay elsewhere and he dreamed of making history paintings, but his plans for grandiose compositions rarely advanced beyond drawings

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait, titled "Portrait of Jane Hoskyns" was created by the renowned British artist George Romney between 1778 and 1780. The subject of this exquisite painting is Jane Hoskyns, who married Sir John Read in 1774. Interestingly, Sir John Read himself sat for a portrait by Romney in 1788. Romney's artistic journey began in Lancashire, where he apprenticed at his father's cabinetmaker shop. However, his true passion lay in painting rather than woodworking. In pursuit of his dreams, he moved to London in 1762 and soon established himself as a successful portraitist alongside esteemed artists like Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Gainsborough. Despite his success as a portrait painter, Romney yearned to create grand historical compositions instead. Unfortunately, these ambitious plans often remained unrealized and only materialized as intricate drawings. The artwork itself showcases the mastery of George Romney's skills with oil on canvas technique. Through delicate brushstrokes and meticulous attention to detail, he captures the essence of Jane Hoskyns' beauty and personality. Today, this remarkable piece is housed at The Cleveland Museum of Art—a testament to both its historical significance and artistic excellence. As we admire this print from Heritage Art/Heritage Images (not affiliated with any commercial use), we are transported back to the elegance and grace that defined the late eighteenth century British society captured so brilliantly by George Romney.
