The tantalising pigtail, (1907). Creator: Unknown
The tantalising pigtail, (1907). The 17-year-old Haydn cuts off a fellow choristers pigtail at the cathedral choir school in Vienna. As he was no longer able to sing high choral parts, the director of music was looking for an excuse to dismiss him: It was the fashion in those days for boys to wear pigtails, and Haydns gaze was one day riveted upon the movements of a pigtail belonging to the chorister seated immediately in front of him. The pigtail was twitched to and fro, or jerked up and down...with a vivacity which was at once fascinating and exasperating to behold...the itching to cut something was too strong to be resisted - the tantalising pigtail was twitching under his very nose... An episode from the life of Austrian composer Joseph Haydn (1732-1809). From " Story-Lives of Great Musicians", by F.J. Rowbotham. [Wells Gardner, Darton & Co. Ltd, London, 1907]

The Tantalising Pigtail
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that takes us back to the 18th century, capturing an amusing episode from the life of renowned Austrian composer Joseph Haydn. In this intriguing image, we witness a mischievous 17-year-old Haydn cutting off a fellow chorister's pigtail at the cathedral choir school in Vienna. The story behind this snapshot unfolds as we learn that Haydn's mischievous act was actually driven by circumstance. The director of music was seeking an excuse to dismiss him because he could no longer sing high choral parts. It was customary for boys in those days to wear pigtails, and one day, Haydn became fixated on the movements of his classmate's pigtail seated right in front of him. The constant twitching and jerking fascinated and exasperated him simultaneously. Unable to resist the temptation any longer, Haydn succumbed to his itching desire to cut something. With scissors in hand, he seized the opportune moment when the tantalizing pigtail twitched under his very nose. Little did he know that this impulsive prank would become part of his legacy. This print not only captures a humorous moment but also provides insight into young Haydn's rebellious nature and playful spirit. It serves as a reminder that even great composers like Joseph Haydn were once mischievous teenagers with their fair share of temptations and pranks up their sleeves.
