Tsukudajima from Eitai Bridge, from the series One Hundred Views of Famous Places in Edo, 1858. Creator: Utagawa Hiroshige (Japanese, 1797-1858)
Tsukudajima from Eitai Bridge, from the series One Hundred Views of Famous Places in Edo, 1858. This woodblock print is from the series of landscape views of Edo, present-day Tokyo, from Hiroshige's late career. The series title is in the dark red rectangular cartouche on the upper right, while the name of the print is in the pink square. Although Tsukudajima and Eitai Bridge are important enough to merit mentions in the title, the island is tiny and in the distance at the mouth of the river, and only part of a bridge piling is visible. Hiroshige's dramatic composition instead foregrounds the oar of a passing boat. Other vessels in the middle distance moored under the starry sky. Fishing boats with burning torches to attract fish ply the water both near the bridge and beyond the island

EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodblock print, titled "Tsukudajima from Eitai Bridge" is part of Utagawa Hiroshige's renowned series called "One Hundred Views of Famous Places in Edo". Created in 1858 during the late career of this esteemed Japanese artist, the print showcases a breathtaking landscape view of Tsukudajima, a small island located at the mouth of a river in present-day Tokyo. While Tsukudajima and Eitai Bridge are mentioned in the title, they appear distant and almost insignificant compared to Hiroshige's deliberate composition. The focal point instead lies on the oar of a passing boat, adding an element of drama to the scene. In the middle distance, various vessels can be seen moored under a starry sky, creating an atmosphere that is both serene and mysterious. The artist skillfully captures everyday life by including fishing boats adorned with burning torches to attract fish. These boats can be observed near the bridge as well as beyond the island. Through his masterful use of color and intricate details, Hiroshige transports viewers back to Japan's Edo period (1615-1868), allowing them to immerse themselves in its rich cultural heritage. This particular woodblock print is housed at The Cleveland Museum of Art and serves as a testament to Utagawa Hiroshige's artistic prowess. It exemplifies his ability to capture not only famous landmarks but also ordinary moments that encapsulate Japan's natural beauty and vibrant traditions.
