EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Triumphal Procession of Willem van Oranje, showcasing the symbolic representations of the virtues associated with Prince William of Orange. The focus lies on the Christian Virtues, which take center stage in this elaborate artwork. At the heart of the image, beneath a prominent "B" an elephant gracefully carries the personification of Hope, one of these Christian Virtues. Surrounding them are playful putti and other personifications representing faith-related virtues like Endurance and Meekness. Each personification is assigned a number, accompanied by Latin explanations above and Dutch translations below their respective images. Amongst this intricate scene are also various symbolic triumphs featuring individuals, trunked animals, cupids known as amores or putti, and even depictions of Hope herself. The print bears historical significance as it portrays Willem I (Prince of Orange) alongside Cornelis van Kittensteyn - both mentioned on the object itself - dating back to either 1623 or 1626. Crafted using paper engraving techniques, this exquisite piece measures approximately 357 mm in height and 270 mm in width.
