EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Emanuel de Grouchy (1766-1847), a renowned French military commander who rose to prominence during the Napoleonic Wars, earning the esteemed title of marechal de France. Born in Châteaudun, France, Grouchy's military career began at a young age, and he quickly distinguished himself as a capable and strategic leader. During the French Revolutionary Wars, Grouchy served under several prominent commanders, including Napoleon Bonaparte. In 1805, he played a crucial role in the Battle of Austerlitz, where the French army, under the command of Napoleon, decisively defeated the combined Austro-Russian forces. Grouchy's victory at the Battle of Wagram in 1809 further solidified his reputation as a formidable military leader. However, Grouchy's career was not without controversy. In 1812, during the disastrous Russian campaign, he was criticized for his handling of the retreat from Moscow. Despite this setback, Grouchy continued to serve in the French army until the end of the Napoleonic Wars. After the fall of Napoleon, Grouchy retired from military life and lived out the remainder of his days in relative obscurity. This print, created in the mid-19th century, serves as a reminder of the illustrious military career of Emanuel de Grouchy, a man who played a significant role in shaping the history of France and Europe during the Napoleonic Wars.
