EDITORS COMMENTS
This elegant photograph captures the radiant beauty and youthful grace of Lady Elizabeth Hester Mary Paget (1916-1980) and her sister Lady Rose Mary Primrose Paget (1919-2005) as they prepare for their debutante presentation in 1933. The sisters, daughters of the 6th Marquess of Anglesey, are dressed in their finest attire, with Lady Elizabeth wearing a stunning gown adorned with intricate beading and a chic hat, while Lady Rose dons a simple yet elegant dress with a matching hat and gloves. The sisters are captured in a candid moment, with Lady Elizabeth playfully resting her arm on her dog and both ladies displaying charming smiles. The photograph was taken by renowned British portrait photographer Mme Yevonde (1893-1975), whose innovative use of lighting and composition brought a modern and artistic touch to society portraits of the time. This photograph is a testament to the glamour and sophistication of the Debutante Season in the 1930s, a time when young women came out into society and were presented to the world as eligible bachelorettes. Lady Elizabeth would go on to marry Raimund von Hofmannsthal, the son of the famous Austrian writer Hugo von Hofmannsthal, in 1939. Lady Rose, meanwhile, married Squadron Leader Hon. John Francis McLaren in 1940. This photograph captures a moment in time, a moment of youth, beauty, and the promise of a bright future for these two young ladies.
