Aerial view of the Manchester Union Industrial School at Swinton. The school, where 800 pauper children were housed and educated away from the workhouse, was established in 1843. It was the subject of the article " A Day in a Pauper Palace" by Charles Dickens. The Swinton Home (top left of picture) was later added to house what were referred to as " mentally defective" children
