A model dairy farm at Carlton House Terrace, WW1

A dairying and haymaking scene, somewhat incongruously in the back garden of Lord and Lady Cowdrays London Home in Carlton House Terrace in central London, one of the capitals smartest addresses and a stones throw from Pall Mall. There at No. 16, Lord and Lady Cowdray had established a model farm where girls were taught haymaking, milking and butter-making and the management of horses with a view to the employment of women on the land to release agricultural labourers for military service. The scheme was organised by the National Political League Land Council, which was raising funds for the mobilisation of women for agricultural labour. Date: 1915

Agriculture Carlton Cowdray Dairy Demonstration Employment Haymaking Learning Role Roles Terrace Dairying

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph from 1915, we witness an unexpected scene of rural life unfolding in the heart of London's Carlton House Terrace. At No. 16, the residence of Lord and Lady Cowdray, a model dairy farm has been established as part of an innovative initiative to teach women the skills of haymaking, milking, and butter-making. This endeavor, organized by the National Political League Land Council, aimed to provide employment opportunities for women in agriculture, releasing agricultural laborers for military service during World War I. The tranquil scene captures a group of young women engaged in haymaking, their sun-kissed faces focused on the task at hand. Nearby, another woman expertly milks a cow, while a third tends to the horses. The verdant garden, dotted with flowers and trees, serves as an idyllic backdrop to this agricultural demonstration. Despite its location in one of London's smartest addresses, mere steps away from Pall Mall, this dairy farm represents a significant role reversal. Women, traditionally relegated to domestic spheres, are now actively participating in agricultural work, contributing to the war effort and challenging societal norms. The photograph stands as a testament to the resilience and adaptability of the British people during wartime, as they embraced new roles and responsibilities to keep the nation running. This poignant image offers a glimpse into a unique moment in history, where the urban and rural worlds collided, and women stepped forward to play a crucial role in the agricultural sector. The model dairy farm at Lord and Lady Cowdray's London home in Carlton House Terrace stands as a symbol of determination, innovation, and the indomitable spirit of the British people during World War I.
