Ebenezer Feathered Headdress Ihle Johann Savage Sibly System Universal Skirt

EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving, titled "A North American Savage," is an illustration from Ebenezer Sibly's Universal System of Natural History, published in 1794-1796. The image depicts a Native American man dressed in traditional attire, wearing a headdress adorned with feathers and a short skirt. A large silver plate is affixed to his chest, and he holds a club in one hand and an axe in the other. The Native American is depicted in a stereotypical manner common during the late 18th century, reflecting European perceptions of indigenous peoples in the Americas. The use of the term "savage" in the title is indicative of the colonial mindset that viewed indigenous peoples as uncivilized and primitive. Despite the problematic representation, this illustration provides valuable insight into the material culture of Native American tribes during this time period. The headdress and short skirt are typical of the clothing worn by some Plains tribes, while the silver plate may have been a symbol of status or wealth. The clubs and axes were essential tools for hunting and survival. The illustration was created by the skilled hand of Johann Ihle, one of the most prolific engravers of the late 18th century. Ihle's intricate engraving technique brings the image to life, capturing the intricacies of the Native American's headdress and the textures of his clothing. The handcoloring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a stunning work of art and an important historical document.
