This stunning chromolithograph depicts the Fish Hawk, or Osprey (Pandion haliaetus), a magnificent bird of prey native to the United States and parts of the Caribbean. The image is based on an ornithological illustration by the renowned naturalist John James Audubon, as featured in Benjamin Harry Warren's Report on the Birds of Pennsylvania, published in Harrisburg in 1890. The Fish Hawk is easily identified by its distinctive appearance, with its large, broad wings, long, hooked beak, and distinctive plumage. The bird's coloration is a mix of brown, white, and gold, with a dark cap on its head and a white underbelly. Its legs and feet are covered in feathers up to the knees, a feature known as semi-palmation, which helps it to grip onto slippery surfaces while catching fish. The Fish Hawk is an expert fisherman, using its sharp talons to seize fish from the water, often hovering above the surface with its wings spread before plunging into the water to capture its prey.
