EDITORS COMMENTS
Francis III, Duke of Brittany (1518-1536), also known as Francois, Dauphin de Viennois and Duke of Brittany, is depicted in this exquisitely hand-colored lithograph by J.B. Gautier. The portrait, based on an original in Roger de Gaignières portfolio VIII 14, provides a striking representation of the young duke during his reign from 1529 to 1536. Born in 1514, Francis III was the eldest son of Claude, Duke of Brittany, and Anne de Beaujeu. At the age of just 14, he succeeded his father and became a significant player in the political landscape of the time. This portrait, created around 1852 by J.B. Gautier for Paul Lacroix's "Costumes Historiques de la France," offers a glimpse into the fashion and style of the period. Francis III is shown wearing the traditional attire of the French nobility, with a richly decorated doublet, hose, and a fur-trimmed cloak. The intricate details of his costume, from the embroidered patterns to the textures of the fabric, are beautifully captured in the lithograph. His regal bearing and piercing gaze convey a sense of confidence and authority, reflecting the power and influence he held as Duke of Brittany. During his reign, Francis III faced numerous challenges, including conflicts with the King of France, Henry II, and the English. Despite these struggles, he managed to maintain Brittany's independence until his untimely death in 1536 at the age of 22. This portrait serves as a poignant reminder of his brief but impactful rule and the rich history of the Duchy of Brittany.
