EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking 17th century copperplate engraving, we find a powerful and regal depiction of Holy Roman Emperor Henry the Fowler, also known as Henry I or Henry I, Otto the Great, and Henricus Auceps. Born in 876, Henry was the Duke of Saxony and later became the first German king to be crowned King of East Francia, marking the beginning of the Ottonian Dynasty. Henry's impressive reign, which lasted from 911 to 936, saw him expand the territories of the Frankish Empire, solidifying his position as a significant European ruler. He also played a crucial role in the political and cultural development of the Holy Roman Empire, earning him the title of the first German Emperor. The engraving, taken from Abraham Bogaert's "De Roomsche Monarchy," or "The Roman Monarchy," published in Utrecht in 1697, showcases Henry as a classical Roman emperor, donning the imperial purple cloak and holding a scepter in one hand and a globe in the other. This representation underscores the connection between the ancient Roman Caesars and the contemporary Holy Roman Emperors, emphasizing the continuity of imperial power and authority. The intricate details of the engraving, such as the ornate decorations on Henry's throne and the elaborate folds of his cloak, serve to highlight the grandeur and majesty of the emperor's court. The engraving also includes an inscription at the bottom, which reads "Henricus I. Imp. Roman. Sax. Rex Francorum," meaning "Henry I, Roman Emperor, Duke of Saxony, King of the Franks." This image of Holy Roman Emperor Henry the Fowler not only serves as a testament to his historical significance but also as a visual representation of the enduring influence of the Roman imperial tradition on European monarchy.
