EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts Jean de Villiers-l'Isle-Adam, Lord of L'Isle-Adam (1384-1437), a prominent figure in 15th century French history. Born into the noble Villiers family, Jean rose to prominence as the governor of Paris during a tumultuous period in French history. He is shown here in full armor, wearing the insignia of the Order of the Golden Fleece, an elite and prestigious chivalric order founded by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in 1430. The intricately detailed armor, adorned with various emblems and heraldic devices, reflects the high status and wealth of its wearer. The background of the print features an elaborate landscape, with a castle and a bridge over a river, further emphasizing the noble and grandeur of the subject. This image is taken from Loredan Larchey's Ancien Armorial Equestre de la Toison d'Or et de l'Europe au 15e siecle (Ancient Equestrian Armorials of the Order of the Golden Fleece and Europe in the 15th century), published in Paris in 1890. The illustration is derived from an earlier manuscript, number 4790, housed in the Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal in Paris.
