EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the Kentish Glory, Endromis versicolora, a beautiful and elusive silkmoth. The Kentish Glory is also known by its scientific names Phalaena versicolora and Bombyx mori versicolor. This exquisite moth is native to Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia, and is known for its vibrant, iridescent wings that can change color depending on the angle of light. The Kentish Glory undergoes a remarkable metamorphosis from caterpillar to adult moth. As a caterpillar, it feeds on various leaves, including those of the elm tree. Once it has grown to maturity, it spins a cocoon, which it encloses in the soil to protect itself during its transformation. After several weeks, the adult moth emerges, ready to fly and mate. This engraving was created by the skilled hand of Johann Georg Klinger, as part of Eugenius Johann Christoph Espers' Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur, published in Erlangen in 1786. Espers was a renowned entomologist and naturalist, and his work was one of the most comprehensive and accurate records of European butterflies and moths of his time. The intricate detail of this engraving showcases the beauty and complexity of the natural world, and serves as a testament to the artistry and scientific knowledge of the time.
