EDITORS COMMENTS
King Louis XIII of France and Navarre, 1630: A Regal Portrait of Power and Grandeur This handcoloured lithograph, created in 1852 by Paul Lacroix for his renowned work "Costumes Historiques de la France" (Historical Costumes of France), offers a captivating glimpse into the past, presenting a striking and intricately detailed image of King Louis XIII of France and Navarre from 1630. Louis XIII, born in 1601, ascended to the throne at the tender age of 12 following the death of his father, Henry IV. His reign, which lasted until his own demise in 1643, was marked by significant political and religious developments, including the establishment of the Cardinal Richelieu's absolute rule and the beginning of the Thirty Years' War. The image showcases the monarch in a grand and regal setting, adorned in the sumptuous attire of the period. He is depicted wearing a long, voluminous robe of state, richly embroidered with gold and silver threads, adorned with pearls and other precious stones. The king's collar is adorned with the Order of the Holy Spirit, a high distinction of the French monarchy. Louis XIII's hair is styled in the contemporary fashion, slicked back and parted in the middle, with a long, flowing beard. His expression is serious and resolute, reflecting the weight of the responsibilities that rested upon his shoulders. The background of the image is filled with an array of courtiers and attendants, all dressed in the opulent clothing of the time, further emphasizing the grandeur and magnificence of the French court during the reign of King Louis XIII.
