This evocative vintage photograph captures a poignant moment during the final stages of the First World War as British and French divers work to clear the sunken pontoon bridge across the River Oise in northern France. The bridge, which had been vital for the movement of troops and supplies between the Allied forces on the western and eastern banks, had been destroyed during the German retreat in March 1918. With the tide turning in favor of the Allies, the bridge needed to be repaired as quickly as possible to facilitate the advance of the victorious Allied forces. The image, taken in 1918, shows a team of brave divers, likely from the Royal Engineers or the French Corps de Sapeurs-Pompiers, working underwater to secure the pontoons and clear them of debris.
