EDITORS COMMENTS
Pepin the Short, also known as Pepin the Younger, was the King of the Franks from 714 to 768 AD. This handcolored copperplate drawing and engraving, created by Leopold Massard for the publication "French Costumes from King Clovis to Our Days," offers a captivating portrait of Pepin in his regal attire. Pepin is depicted wearing a grand tunic, adorned with intricate fleurdelys patterns, fastened at the waist with a large gold buckle. Over the tunic, he wears a long, fur-lined cape, which is secured at the neck with a brooch. The king's crown, topped with a cross and fleurdelys, sits proudly on his head. In his right hand, he holds a scepter, a symbol of his royal authority, while in his left hand, he clutches a tablet, possibly used for recording decrees or laws. The throne behind Pepin is ornately decorated with lionheads, a common motif in Frankish art, and the floor beneath him is covered in a rich, patterned rug. The king's attire is further embellished with an array of jewels, including a large, cross-shaped pendant hanging from a chain around his neck. The intricate details of the engraving, from the delicate fleurdelys patterns to the lionhead decorations, serve to highlight the grandeur and opulence of the Frankish court during Pepin's reign. Pepin the Short was an important figure in Frankish history, known for his military conquests and his role in the establishment of the Carolingian dynasty. This portrait offers a glimpse into the fashion and style of the medieval period, as well as a reminder of the rich history and cultural traditions of the Frankish kingdom.
