One of the features of the fighting in France has been the
close support given to the Army by RAF fighter bombers.
The Typhoon fighter bomber now carries two 1, 000 lb bombs on certain operations. A crew of four armourers is required to hoist these bombs into position with the aid of bomb-lifting winches, or " hockey sticks" as they are called by the Canadians seen in the picture.
The Typhoons also carry four 20 mm cannon. Ground crews on a forward airfield
have timed the interval from take-off to return as 15 minutes for many of the sorties.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the intense fighting in France during World War Two. One cannot help but be amazed by the close support provided to the Army by RAF fighter bombers, as depicted in this image. The focus of the picture is on a group of Canadian soldiers, known as armourers, who are diligently hoisting two 1,000 lb bombs into position beneath the wings of a Typhoon fighter bomber. The dedication and precision required for such an operation is evident from their focused expressions. These brave men make use of bomb-lifting winches or "hockey sticks" as affectionately referred to by Canadians. It's fascinating to witness how these massive bombs are carefully attached with utmost care and expertise. The Typhoon itself is an impressive aircraft equipped not only with these powerful bombs but also four 20 mm cannon. This lethal combination undoubtedly played a crucial role in combat missions against enemy targets. Additionally, it's worth noting that ground crews stationed at forward airfields achieved remarkable efficiency during sorties, with some pilots completing missions within just 15 minutes from take-off to return. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the courage and collaboration between different branches of military forces during one of history's most significant conflicts - World War Two.
