EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the spirit of daring and determination that defined the early days of motor racing. Taken on February 14, 1919 during the Scottish Six Days Trials organized by the Edinburgh and District Motor Club (EDMC), it depicts Lieutenant B. Alan Hill and his passenger, both clad in heavy coats and goggles, posing confidently in their Morgan Grand Prix-JAP. The Scottish Six Days Trials were some of the most challenging endurance events of the time, with competitors facing harsh weather conditions, treacherous terrain, and technical difficulties. The trials were held over six consecutive days, covering a distance of approximately 600 miles, and were considered a true test of both man and machine. Lieutenant Hill's Morgan Grand Prix-JAP, with its powerful J.A.P. engine and sleek, aerodynamic design, was a formidable machine for the trials. The Morgan Motor Company, founded in 1910, was known for producing lightweight and agile cars that were popular among racing enthusiasts. The J.A.P. engine, manufactured by J.A.P. and Co. Ltd., was a reliable and powerful choice for the trials, providing the necessary horsepower to tackle the challenging courses. Despite the harsh conditions and the inherent risks involved, competitors like Lieutenant Hill pushed themselves and their machines to the limit, driven by a passion for speed and the thrill of competition. This photograph is a testament to their courage and the enduring allure of motor racing in the early 20th century.
