EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection transports us back to a vibrant procession in ancient times. The central figure, Silenus, carries an ass while being preceded by a lively bacchant playing cymbals. These intriguing figures come to life through the intricate details of this ca. 1531 engraving by Agostino Veneziano. Measuring 7 5/16 x 10 3/16 inches (18.5 x 25.9 cm), this print showcases the skill and artistry of Italian artist Agostino Veneziano, who was born in Venice around 1490 and worked extensively in Rome until his death after 1536. It is believed that this work was either designed by Giulio Romano or Raphael himself, both renowned artists of their time. The arrival of Veneziano in Rome in 1516 marked the beginning of his collaboration with other notable artists such as Marcantonio Raimondi and Marco Dente da Ravenna, who based their drawings on designs created by Giulio or Raphael's students. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece, we are transported into a world filled with mythological characters and ancient rituals. The dynamic composition captures our attention while inviting us to explore every intricate detail meticulously engraved onto the surface. This print serves as a testament to Artokoloro's dedication to preserving historical artwork and allowing us to appreciate these masterpieces for generations to come.
