Fowey to Polruan Ferry, Fowey, Cornwall. January 1993
Paul Toms at the helm of the Fowey to Polruan ferry, which has been bought by his father Allen Toms who owns Toms Boatyard in Polruan. The ferry was motorised just before the First World War but can be dated back to the 16th century when a rowing boat plied the route. This purchase by the Toms family means that they own both ferries across Fowey harbour, for they ve owned the Bodinnick car ferry, half a mile upriver, since 1975. Photographer: Jonathan Barker

EDITORS COMMENTS
Capturing a piece of history, this print showcases Paul Toms at the helm of the iconic Fowey to Polruan Ferry in January 1993. The ferry, which has been recently purchased by Paul's father Allen Toms, is a testament to their family's deep connection with maritime heritage. As owners of Toms Boatyard in Polruan, the Toms family now proudly possesses both ferries that traverse Fowey harbour. Dating back centuries, this remarkable vessel can trace its origins to the 16th century when a humble rowing boat served as its predecessor. Motorized just before World War I, it continues to serve as an essential mode of transportation between these charming Cornish towns. The photograph beautifully captures not only the serene waters and picturesque surroundings but also highlights important safety features like lifebelts and fire extinguishers on board. It serves as a reminder of how vital these precautions are for safeguarding passengers during their journey across Fowey harbour. This image is more than just a snapshot; it encapsulates generations of seafaring tradition and represents the enduring spirit of Cornwall's coastal communities. Preserved within Royal Cornwall Museum's collection, it stands as a tribute to those who have dedicated themselves to preserving our rich maritime legacy.
