Barringer Crater, aerial photograph

Barringer Crater, Arizona, USA, aerial photograph. This crater, also known as Meteor Crater, was formed over 50, 000 years ago by the impact of an iron meteorite (space rock) colliding with the Earth. The meteorite is thought to have weighed more than 10, 000 tonnes. The resulting crater is 183 metres deep, with a diameter of 1200 metres. It is named after the US mining engineer and businessman Daniel Barringer (1860-1929) who first proposed that the crater was created by a meteorite impact. Coesite and stishovite, silica minerals created at high temperatures and pressures, were first identified here. Photographed in 1940

EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial photograph showcases the magnificent Barringer Crater, also known as Meteor Crater, located in Arizona, USA. Formed over 50,000 years ago by a colossal iron meteorite colliding with Earth's surface, this natural wonder continues to awe visitors from around the world. With a weight estimated at over 10,000 tonnes, the impact of this space rock created a massive crater that measures an impressive 183 meters deep and spans 1200 meters in diameter. Named after Daniel Barringer, an esteemed mining engineer and businessman who first proposed its extraterrestrial origin, this geological marvel holds significant historical value. In fact, it was here that coesite and stishovite minerals were initially identified – silica formations resulting from extreme temperatures and pressures. The photograph itself was taken in 1940 and offers a unique perspective of the crater's circular shape and imposing walls. This single shot captures both the grandeur of nature's power and humanity's fascination with planetary science. Designated as a national natural landmark due to its exceptional features, Barringer Crater stands as a testament to Earth's ancient history while providing valuable insights into our planet's geology. Privately owned but open for public exploration since its discovery in prehistoric times until today; it remains one of North America's most remarkable tourist attractions.
