Lumbar spinal nerves, 1825 artwork

Lumbar spinal nerves. Lateral view of the lower vertebral column, showing nerves (white) of the sympathetic nervous system. The pelvic ilium bone has been removed. These nerves innervate internal organs such as the kidney (brown) and uterus (orange). At right is the aorta (red) and vena cava (blue). This anatomical artwork is plate 200 from volume 3 of Manuel d anatomie descriptive du corps humain (1825). This 5-volume anatomy atlas was produced by French physician and surgeon Jules Germain Cloquet (1790-1883). The illustrations were by Haincelin. Volume 3 illustrated the anatomy of the human nervous system

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century artwork, titled "Lumbar Spinal Nerves" offers a fascinating glimpse into the intricate network of nerves within the human body. Created in 1825 by French physician and surgeon Jules Germain Cloquet, this illustration is part of his renowned five-volume anatomy atlas, Manuel d'anatomie descriptive du corps humain. The artist Haincelin skillfully depicts the lateral view of the lower vertebral column, with white nerves representing the sympathetic nervous system. In this detailed print, we observe how these lumbar spinal nerves innervate vital internal organs such as the kidney (brown) and uterus (orange). Notably, the pelvic ilium bone has been removed to provide an unobstructed view. Adjacent to these nerve clusters are prominent blood vessels: the aorta (red) and vena cava (blue), which play crucial roles in our circulatory system. The historical significance of this artwork lies not only in its anatomical accuracy but also in its contribution to medical knowledge during that era. It serves as a testament to early advancements in understanding neurology and provides valuable insights into human physiology. As we admire this stunning piece from Science Photo Library's collection, it reminds us of our complex inner workings and highlights how far medical science has progressed since Cloquet's time. This print stands as a timeless tribute to both artistry and scientific exploration—a visual representation that continues to inspire awe and curiosity about our own bodies' remarkable intricacies.
