Waylands Smithy, Oxfordshire, UK
Waylands Smithy, Oxfordshire, UK. This is the site of a Neolithic chamber tomb and a long barrow tomb. Excavations between 1962 and 1963 proved they were built in different time periods. A timber oval chamber was built around 3700 BC followed by a stone long barrow chamber built around 3400 BC. Excavations in 1919 found the remains of 14 individuals in the timber chamber, and 18 skeletons, including one of a child, in the long barrow. Waylands Smithy was named by Saxon settlers who thought the tomb was the work of one of their Gods, Wayland the Smith
