EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print depicts a scene from the 1919 Gaumont film adaptation of H. G. Wells' classic science fiction novel, "The First Men on the Moon." In this intriguing moment, the inventor, dressed in early 20th-century attire, communicates with the Grand Lunar, an otherworldly being from the moon. The author himself approved the costumes and closely supervised the production, ensuring a faithful adaptation of his beloved story. The bizarre and unusual appearance of the Grand Lunar, with his elongated limbs and bulbous head, adds to the amusing and fascinating atmosphere of this early science fiction film. The inventor's sphere, a crucial element in the story, is also clearly visible in the background, emphasizing the groundbreaking nature of the narrative. Unfortunately, this film is now lost to history, leaving us only with images like this one to imagine the wonder and excitement it must have provided to audiences at the time. The blend of science, fiction, and humor in "The First Men on the Moon" continues to captivate and inspire, making this scene a testament to the enduring appeal of H. G. Wells' timeless tale.
