Tornado GR4 Aircraft
A Tornado GR4 aircraft at Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan is pictured at night.
Entitled The Beast of Kandahar, this image was the winner of Category I Best Amateur Military sponsored by Jessops in the RAF Photography competition 2012.
The Tornado GR4 is a variable geometry, two-seat, day or night, all-weather attack aircraft capable of delivering a wide variety of weapons.
Powered by two Rolls-Royce RB 199 Mk 103 turbofan engines, the GR4 is capable of low-level supersonic flight and can sustain a high subsonic cruise speed.
The aircraft can fly automatically at low level using Terrain Following Radar (TFR) when poor weather prevents visual flight. The aircraft is also equipped with Forward Looking InfraRed (FLIR) and is Night Vision Goggle (NVG) compatible. This gives it a relatively unique all weather night capability as well as making it an impressive platform for mounting passive night electro-optical operations.
For navigation purposes, the Tornado is equipped with an integrated Global Positioning Inertial Navigation System (GPINS). The GR4 also has a Ground Mapping Radar (GMR) to identify fix-points and update navigation systems as well as providing an air to air search facility.
The GR4 is also equipped with a Laser Ranger and Marked Target Seeker (LRMTS) that can be used to locate targets designated on the ground or can provide accurate range information to ground targets

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Tornado GR4 aircraft at Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan, illuminated against the night sky. Aptly titled "The Beast of Kandahar" this image was awarded the prestigious Category I Best Amateur Military prize sponsored by Jessops in the RAF Photography competition 2012. The Tornado GR4 is an exceptional two-seat, variable geometry attack aircraft designed for day or night operations and all-weather conditions. Its versatility lies in its ability to deliver a wide range of weapons with precision and accuracy. Powered by two Rolls-Royce RB 199 Mk 103 turbofan engines, the GR4 possesses remarkable capabilities such as low-level supersonic flight and high subsonic cruise speed. It can navigate through poor weather using Terrain Following Radar (TFR) and boasts Forward Looking InfraRed (FLIR) technology, making it compatible with Night Vision Goggles (NVG). These features grant it a unique advantage for conducting all-weather night missions and passive electro-optical operations. Equipped with an integrated Global Positioning Inertial Navigation System (GPINS), the Tornado ensures accurate navigation during flights. Additionally, its Ground Mapping Radar (GMR) aids in identifying fix-points while providing air-to-air search capabilities. Notably, the GR4 also incorporates a Laser Ranger and Marked Target Seeker (LRMTS), enabling precise target acquisition on the ground or delivering accurate range information to ground targets. This makes it an impressive platform for military operations. Captured by SAC Tim Laurence from Armed Forces, this photograph encapsulates both the power and sophistication of this remarkable aircraft as it stands ready to fulfill its mission amidst challenging circumstances.
