Auditorium of the new London Hippodrome
The interior of the brand new London Hippodrome at the corner of Charing Cross Road and Cranbourn Street. Built by theatre architect Frank Matcham for Edward Moss of Moss Empires Limited, in its first decade it specialised in circus variety. Its famous water spectacles took place in the water tank which could be raised and lowered by a hydraulic system. Illustration shows the opulent interior and the tank centre. The building went through several transformations over the years, most notably becoming the Talk of the Town in 1958 when Matchams original interior was dismantled to create a modern theatre restaurant. In 1982, it was bought by Peter Stringfellow who turned it into a disco (and restored its original name). Today is operates as the Hippodrome Casino. Date: 1900

EDITORS COMMENTS
Step into the magnificent world of the new London Hippodrome, as depicted in this stunning turn-of-the-century illustration. Located at the corner of Charing Cross Road and Cranbourn Street, this architectural marvel was designed by the renowned theatre architect Frank Matcham for Edward Moss of Moss Empires Limited. In its early days, the Hippodrome was a hub of circus variety, showcasing breathtaking water spectacles in its impressive tank, which could be raised and lowered by a hydraulic system. The interior was a lavish and opulent display of Matcham's vision, with ornate decorations and grand architecture that left audiences in awe. Over the years, the Hippodrome underwent several transformations. In the 1950s, it became the Talk of the Town, with Matcham's original interior being dismantled to create a modern theatre restaurant. However, its original name and grandeur were revived in 1982 when it was bought by Peter Stringfellow, who turned it into a disco. Today, the Hippodrome continues to be a popular destination, operating as the Hippodrome Casino and offering a unique blend of entertainment and gaming experiences. This image takes us back in time, inviting us to imagine the wonder and excitement that once filled the halls of this iconic London landmark.
