Mr Selfridges Room, Lansdowne House BL25525
LANSDOWNE HOUSE, Berkeley Square, London. An interior view of Mr Selfridges Room. Photographed by Bedford Lemere and Company, 1921. At the time of this photograph, Lansdowne House was leased to the American retail entrepreneur Gordon Selfridge, of Selfridges department store fame. Lansdowne House was the family home of the Marquesses of Lansdowne, but like many London homes of the aristocracy, it proved difficult for the owners to maintain in the harsh British economic climate after the First World War, and prior to a period of it being leased out to occupiers, it was finally sold off and became a gentlemens and ladies club

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the opulent interior of Mr Selfridge's room in Lansdowne House, located in Berkeley Square, London. Taken by Bedford Lemere and Company in 1921, this image showcases the exquisite taste and grandeur that defined the family home of the Marquesses of Lansdowne. During this period, Lansdowne House was leased to Gordon Selfridge, a prominent American retail entrepreneur known for his iconic department store - Selfridges. The photograph offers a glimpse into Mr Selfridge's personal space within this magnificent residence. The room is adorned with luxurious furniture and elegant paintings that reflect both sophistication and refinement. Every detail has been meticulously curated to create an atmosphere of timeless beauty. Lansdowne House had once been a cherished abode for aristocratic families; however, like many other prestigious London homes after World War I, it became increasingly challenging for its owners to maintain due to economic hardships. Eventually sold off, it transformed into a distinguished gentlemen's and ladies' club. This remarkable photograph not only immortalizes Mr Selfridge's private sanctuary but also serves as a testament to the changing times and shifting fortunes experienced by these historic residences. It allows us to appreciate the splendor of an era gone by while acknowledging how these architectural gems have adapted over time.
