He was suddenly startled to see a girlish form coming towards him in the wavering shadows, 1919
He was suddenly startled to see a girlish form coming towards him in the wavering shadows, 1919. Hayashi was walking along the Sumida riverbank one evening, when he was suddenly startled to see a girlish form coming towards him in the wavering shadows of declining day. Light as a summer zephyr she glided from under the arches of the blossom laden cherry-trees with the sunset flaming behind her. He remembered long afterward that she had seemed rather to float over the ground than to walk. To his utter astonishment he at once recognized Tama, and his heart leapt with joy at sight of her. Illustration to " The Reincarnation of Tama", a story in " Romances of Old Japan", by Madame Yukio Ozaki. [Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co. Ltd, London, 1919]

EDITORS COMMENTS
Caption: "A Startling Encounter in the Shadows of Old Japan, 1919". This print captures a moment of astonishment and wonder as Hayashi, a character from Madame Yukio Ozaki's enchanting story "The Reincarnation of Tama" experiences an unexpected encounter. Walking along the serene Sumida riverbank at dusk, Hayashi is suddenly startled by the ethereal presence of a girlish figure emerging from the wavering shadows. As if guided by unseen forces, she gracefully glides towards him with cherry blossom-laden arches framing her silhouette against the backdrop of a fiery sunset. In this mesmerizing scene illustrated by an unknown artist for "Romances of Old Japan" we witness Hayashi's heart leaping with joy upon recognizing his beloved Tama. Dressed in traditional Japanese kimono attire, their reunion transcends time and death itself. The image evokes notions of love, reincarnation, and spiritual connection that are central to Madame Yukio Ozaki's tale. The delicate balance between reality and fantasy is beautifully captured through subtle color tones and intricate details. This artwork not only transports us to early 20th-century Japan but also immerses us in a world where apparitions roam freely among mortals. It serves as a testament to both the artistic talent behind its creation and the enduring power of storytelling to evoke emotions across generations.
