EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the awe-inspiring Apsidal arch: Etymasia with the instruments of passion, restored in 1979. Created by Byzantine artists during the 12th-13th century, this masterpiece can be found in the Duomo (Cattedrale di Santa Maria Nuova) in Monreale, Sicily. The etymasia is a profound iconographic theme that symbolizes Christ's imminent return to Earth for universal judgment. In this particular representation, an empty throne adorned with Christ's insignia takes center stage. Resting on the throne is a blue mantle representing his human garment while above it hovers the Holy Spirit depicted as a dove. Surrounding the throne are significant elements such as a two-armed cross, spear, and cane - all instruments associated with Christ's passion and crucifixion. At its base lies a small jar containing the four nails used during his Crucifixion. The golden background of this Byzantine school mosaic adds an ethereal glow to the entire composition, enhancing its spiritual significance. The mosaics within Monreale Cathedral were meticulously crafted by both local and Venetian artisans trained at the renowned Byzantine school. This remarkable print captures not only intricate details but also centuries-old craftsmanship that continues to inspire awe and reverence today. It serves as a testament to humanity's enduring fascination with religious art and our collective desire to connect with something greater than ourselves.
