A Panorama of Cape Roberts Looking North, c1911, (1913). Artist: T Griffith Taylor
A Panorama of Cape Roberts. Where The Western Party Was Isolated for Three Weeks. Looking North, c1911, (1913). Landmarks: Piedmont Glacier, Mount Marston, Kar Plateau and Outer Granite Harbour. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "A Panorama of Cape Roberts Looking North, c1911" takes us back in time to the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. The image, captured by artist T Griffith Taylor in 1913, showcases the stunning landscape surrounding Cape Roberts. As we gaze upon this panoramic view, our eyes are drawn to the prominent landmarks that dot the icy terrain. The Piedmont Glacier stands tall and majestic, its frozen beauty contrasting with the rugged peaks of Mount Marston in the distance. The Kar Plateau stretches out before us, a vast expanse of untouched wilderness that seems both desolate and enchanting. And beyond it all lies Outer Granite Harbour, a glimpse into an unforgiving yet awe-inspiring world. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of Scott's ill-fated journey to reach the South Pole. With his team consisting of experts from various fields such as geology, zoology, and meteorology among others, Scott aimed not only for exploration but also scientific discovery. Tragically beaten by Norwegian explorer Amundsen in their race to be first at the geographic South Pole, Scott and his remaining companions faced insurmountable challenges on their return journey. Blizzards delayed them and dwindling supplies led to their demise at the end of March 1912. The discovery of their bodies and diaries eight months later added another layer to this tale of bravery and sacrifice. This print is a testament to their enduring spirit amidst nature's harshest elements - forever capturing a moment frozen in time from one of history's most iconic expeditions.
