EDITORS COMMENTS
Queen Victoria Square, Hull, Yorkshire, after the Blitz raids of 8th and 9th of May 1941. This haunting print captures the devastating aftermath of the relentless bombing campaign that targeted Kingston upon Hull during World War II. The German Luftwaffe unleashed large-scale attacks on this English port city, resulting in immense destruction and loss of life. The most concentrated assaults occurred on the nights of 7/8 and 8/9 May 1941, claiming nearly 400 lives. Another significant attack took place in July that year with an additional 143 fatalities. Throughout the war, Hull endured over a thousand hours under alert from June 1940 to 1945. This image showcases Queen Victoria Square reduced to ruins – a once vibrant city center now transformed into a scene of desolation. Amidst piles of rubble and debris lie remnants of buildings destroyed by bombs dropped from above. The statue honoring Queen Victoria stands as a solitary figure amidst the devastation – a symbol not only for resilience but also for the strength and determination displayed by the people who faced unimaginable hardships during those dark times. Let us remember those who lost their lives and pay tribute to all those affected by these tragic events. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the horrors endured during one chapter in our history known as 'the Blitz'.
